The day started like any other week-day in the life of a full time grad student, apart from the fact that I was trying to balance my online business and my job, looking for the next big business and enterprise idea to write about when I spotted them! A tiny fleet of colorful trucks lined on the university grounds outside my workplace. I went out to get a closer look at them and it turned out they were fashion trucks and mobile boutiques! Quite frankly, I had never seen one before all the years I have been in this country. Food trucks, yes! I wondered if they were regular business endeavors or something designed only for special occasions. How’d they be something out there already if they were so elusive!! Turned out they were parked for a speaking event organized by some local entrepreneurs.
So what are fashion trucks?
First originating along the West coast, they have now spread over to other regions. Contrary to the brick and mortar stores whose leases can run into thousands of dollars a month, these mobile boutiques are run out of delivery trucks, buses or RVs at a fraction of the cost.
If you have an eye for style and a love for treading out into the (urban) unknown, this might just be the thing for you. If you are a designer, you could have your own personal boutique on wheels! Why stop there, it could be art-work, home-décor or anything that you fancy (legal, of course) and might have a market!
The logistics might alter from place to place and you might have special laws to deal with, but make sure you have put in ample research before you plan to take a leap in this direction! Who knew channeling your creative style on Instagram could be a full time profession for some people, even a few years ago! With the world going digital and mobile, though some businesses might need you invest upfront, there’s still plenty others where creativity and enterprise are just the tools you need to succeed! And, friendly laws and good regulations! And reliable people! And Macaroons!
Back to mobile boutiques:
Because these are often part time ventures for some entrepreneurs, they might be open for business only during the weekends and have their weekly stops planned sometimes months in advance. You can stop by their websites and find out where they will be stopping next. They usually have a small collection of handpicked clothing or accessories and based on their popularity or just the fact that most people are attracted to these bright, inviting trucks, they sell out within hours!
